The program will be the third annual report of a five year study of poverty among women and children in Polk County. The data gathered will be discussed by Dr. Charles Latimer, psychologist of the Polk County Schools, Gordon Schneider, Director of Polk County Mental Health Department, Mrs. Helen White of Polk County Health Services, and Mrs. Mary Milroy of the Interfaith Ministry of Hendersonville. — Reporter Handicap Project The Polk County Title VI B Education of the Handicap Project for 1990-91 is open for inspection for any interested par ty at the Polk County Board of Education Center, 202 East Mills Street, Columbus, N.C. May 21 through May 25, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Newman Honored At UNC-Charlotte Richard Newman of Howard Gap Road in Tryon received the Humanitarian Award from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He also recieved the UNCC Student Legislature Club of the Year Award, for the Model United Nations. One Fifth Of Pack’s Land May Already Be Zoned Much of Claudy Pack's objec tion to a request for residential zoning along Skyuka Road during a public hearing on the matter last week centered on the contention that his 52 acres cannot support houses. But Polk County Zoning Administrator David Draughn said Friday that he believes as much as one fifth of Pack's land, about ten acres, is already zoned residential. The zoned ten acres would be part of the lowest, wettest section in the bottom, as well, Draughn told the Polk County Planning and Zoning Board Thursday night — the very portion Pack objected most strenuously to having zoned. Draughn expected to present his findings to the Polk County Board of Commissioners when it meets this afternoon to decide the Skyuka Road zoning case. Draughn has been studying the county's official zoning map, created in 1965 and transferring the zoning lines on that map to the county’s land record maps. Although the county did not record its zoning by precise “metes and bounds” in 1965, Draughn said officials from the N.C. Division of Community Assistance in the Department of Economic Development will visit the county next month to work on the maps.
